A wonderful night of delicious festive fare, music and an entertaining dramatisation of Lady Denman’s trailblazing initiatives was held in the beautiful Rosemont garden, an 1850s colonial home on Thursday 26 November.
Lady Denman made her mark in Australia while the wife of the 5th Governor General of Australia, 1910 – 1913. Later in England through her roles as chair of the National Birth Control Association, later called the Family Planning Association, she urged the benefit of contraception in women’s lives.
Lady Denman ‘chaired a meeting’ and was played by Mary Chiarella, Professor of Nursing, Sydney School of Nursing, University of Sydney. A few of her Vice Presidents present were: Julian Huxley by Taine Moufarrige, Lady Limerick by Genevieve Wild, John Maynard Keynes by Lyle Procter, Bertrand Russell by Howard Tanner and Lady Diana Mosley by Jaqui Lane. The National Council of Women’s letter of praise was read by Lynne Metcalfe. Adrienne Halley made Marie Stopes’ interjection; a rabble of women acclaiming Marie Stopes’ device was Miranda Johnson; and Margaret Pyke was played by Deborah Bateson.
